Where Scottish Kings and Queens Lived
The Royal Palace is one of the oldest and most significant buildings within Edinburgh Castle. It served as the principal royal residence in Scotland for centuries and is home to the Honours of Scotland — the oldest crown jewels in the British Isles.
The palace grew and changed over many centuries of Scottish royal history. The oldest surviving parts date from the 15th century, though the site has been a royal residence since much earlier. Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to the future James VI of Scotland (James I of England) here in 1566.
