The Heart of Edinburgh Castle
Crown Square is the main courtyard at the summit of Edinburgh Castle. It is surrounded by four key buildings and has been the ceremonial and administrative heart of the castle for over 500 years.
The square takes its name from the Honours of Scotland (the Crown Jewels) which are housed in the Royal Palace on its east side. It was created in the late 15th century and takes on a roughly rectangular shape, flanked by the Great Hall to the south, the Royal Palace to the east, the Scottish National War Memorial to the north, and the Queen Anne Building to the west.
